Free Spirit was the fourth of the four songs Drake posted to the OVO blog ahead of Take Care, released September 10, 2011, produced by Noah '40' Shebib over a sample of Sade's 'I Will Be Your Friend' and featuring Rick Ross. Its recurring hook ('tat my name on you so I know it's real') frames it as a record about possession, branding and a kind of restless, conditional devotion, freedom and attachment held in tension, with Ross's verse extending the swagger. It fits the introspective-but-detached strain of Drake's loosie catalog, and on Care Package it adds another shade to the compilation's portrait of his non-album voice: more interested in ambivalence than resolution.
