Jimmy Cooks
Featuring 21 Savage
Jimmy Cooks is the closing track on Honestly, Nevermind, and the song that arguably converted the most skeptical listeners to the album's house-and-Baltimore-club experiment. Produced by Tay Keith with co-production from FNZ and Nik Frascona, the track is the only proper rap song on a project otherwise dedicated to four-on-the-floor dance textures. It opens with a sparse Tay Keith percussion pattern, then drops into a high-tempo rap workout from Drake and 21 Savage, who trade verses in their most punctuated, syllable-heavy mode. The song's title references 'Jimmy Brooks,' the Degrassi character Drake played in his pre-rap years, used here as a kind of self-myth handshake. Released in June 2022 with no advance singles, Jimmy Cooks debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and gave Honestly, Nevermind a commercial anchor that allowed the album's dance experiments more room to breathe. It's also frequently cited as one of the first major exhibits in the case for a full Drake-21 Savage joint album, which arrived later that year as Her Loss.
