"Demons" leans into the darker atmosphere implied by Dark Lane Demo Tapes' title and is one of its clearest stylistic departures: a Brooklyn-drill-influenced track featuring New York drill rappers Fivio Foreign and Sosa Geek. Produced by British producer JB Made It (who made the beat in January 2020 during New York sessions), it finds Drake rapping in an urban London accent with UK slang, an approach Uproxx's Aaron Williams called 'Top Boy-esque' and which fueled the period's recurring 'culture vulture' debate. The song moves between paranoia, defiance and self-reckoning, the lyrics widely read as conflating personal struggle with the suspicion surrounding a figure of his stature; 'demons' stays deliberately ambiguous — psychological, interpersonal and competitive at once. The production stays shadowy and restrained, reinforcing the project's nocturnal mood, and the drill features anchor it firmly in the New York scene Drake was engaging at the time. The Guardian singled it out, with 'D4L' and 'War,' as one of the mixtape's strongest cuts; rather than triumphing over its threats, the song circles them, the conflict left atmospheric and unresolved by design.
